About the Lecture Series

Gresham College are hosting a music lecture series from September 2023 - May 2024.


The lecture series will examine how music exploits our innate listening faculties to communicate complex emotions. All lectures will be hosted by Professor Milton Mermikides from Gresham College.


Is Music Infinite?

Thursday 16th May 2024, 18:00 BST

Professor Milton Mermikides will explore the limits of music and investigate its historical effects.

Professor Milton Mermikides will discuss the history of musicians' engagement with pitch and the mechanics that determine the 12 notes of a piano.


The Colour Spectrum of Scales and Modes

Thursday 22nd February 2024, 18:00 BST

Professor Milton Mermikides will explore the history, theory and artistry of scale construction of styles.


Musical Consonance and Dissonance: The Good, Bad, and Beautifully Ugly

Thursday 25th April 2024, 18:00 BST

Professor Milton Mermikides will explore the concept of 'musical flavour'. You will also be introduced to the interval vector and use 'The Hendrix Chord' as a case study.
